Thermocouple Tubing

Nordt Engineered Precious Metals manufactures FusionForged® precious metal tubing for thermocouple manufacturers. Platinum / Rhodium alloys are typically preferred.

Fusion Forging creates thermocouple tubing that is ideally suited to provide maximum “In service Life”. The Material Benefits include maximum theoretical density which addresses the issue of premature material failure caused by the high temperature environments. How does maximum density help with this?  Nordt thermocouple tubing is virtually porosity free.

A thermocouple is a thermoelectric device used to accurately measure temperatures. Usually thermocouples consist of two dissimilar metals which are joined so that the difference generated between the two dissimilar contact points measures the temperature.

A thermocouple Sensor works when the junction of the two metals is heated or cooled and a voltage is produced that can be correlated back to the temperature. Both thermocouple alloys and thermocouple sensors are commonly available in the form of wire.
The four most common thermocouple calibrations are J,K,T and E. There are high temperature calibrations R,S,C and GB. Each calibration has a different temperature range and environment. Obviously, the maximum temperature varies with the diameter of the wire used in the thermocouple and accordingly the maximum temperature range is dependent upon the diameter of the wire. So, while calibration dictates the temperature range, wire diameter dictates maximum temperature range.

There are three junction types of Sheathed Thermocouples:

  1. Grounded – Wires physically attached to inside probe wall. This offers excellent heat transfer from outside through the probe wall to the thermocouple junction.
  2. Ungrounded – The thermocouple junction is detached from the probe wall. This offers electrical isolation as a benefit.
  3. Exposed Ground – This style protrudes out of the tip of the sheath and is exposed to the surrounding environment. This type offers the best response time, but is limited in use to dry, non-corrosive and non-pressurized applications.
